HAM Group Home (Wellington, South Africa) & Steinthal Group Home (Tulbagh, South Africa)
In response to critical reading weaknesses identified among K-8 students in South Africa, Dr. Gray designed and led a comprehensive reading intervention program across two group home locations and one preschool.
The initiative was grounded in the Science of Reading – evidence-based practices for phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
Locations: Two group homes + one preschool, South Africa
Duration: 12 months
Role: Program Designer, Lead Trainer, Curriculum Developer
Critical reading weaknesses
K-8 students were significantly behind grade-level benchmarks
Limited resources
Group homes lacked structured literacy programs and materials
Untrained staff
House mothers and caregivers had no formal training in reading instruction
Low engagement
Students viewed reading as a chore, not a joy
Without intervention, these students faced continued academic failure and diminished life opportunities.
Dr. Gray developed a systematic reading program grounded in the Science of Reading, including:
Original phonics-based books – Designed to inspire a desire to learn and enjoy reading
Structured lesson plans – Daily, repeatable, and effective
Assessment tools – Progress monitoring for every student
Literacy-rich environment guides – Transforming living spaces into reading spaces
Dr. Gray trained three distinct groups to ensure sustainability:
Student Teachers - One-on-one tutors who delivered daily reading instruction - 20 tutors
Teachers - Classroom educators who integrated Science of Reading practices
House Mothers - Caregivers who created literacy-rich environments and reinforced foundational skills
Training topics included:
Phonemic awareness and phonics instruction
Blending, segmenting, and manipulating sounds
Creating literacy-rich environments
Encouraging a love of reading
Progress monitoring and data-informed adjustments
Dr. Gray wrote and published a collection of phonics-based reading books specifically for this program. The books were designed to:
Capture student interest with engaging stories
Reinforce specific phonics skills systematically
Build confidence through successful reading experiences
Create a desire to learn and enjoy reading
These books remain available for use in reading intervention programs worldwide.
The program delivered measurable, sustainable results. Within the first year, reading proficiency improved by 40%, and over three academic terms, struggling readers were reduced by 50%. Student confidence showed a significant increase, documented through qualitative feedback. Teacher effectiveness improved measurably in classroom reading instruction. Most importantly, program sustainability was built in: trained local staff ensure continued impact beyond the pilot period
"The children who couldn't read a single word in January were reading simple sentences by June. More importantly, they were proud of themselves."
— Program participant (paraphrased from program evaluation)
This pilot demonstrates that Science of Reading-based intervention works, even in low-resource environments with non-professional tutors. Key success factors included a systematic method of daily, repeatable lessons based on evidence; engaging materials, including original books designed to inspire joy; multi-level training that supported tutors, teachers, and house mothers; data-driven adjustments informed by regular assessment; and a sustainability focus that ensured local staff were trained to continue the work.
The methods developed in this pilot are directly transferable to:
International schools serving struggling readers
NGO literacy programs
Refugee and displaced learner settings
Low-resource schools in any country
Teacher training programs for early literacy
